Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, born in Long Beach California. When she was a young girl, DuVernay's aunt Denise encouraged her passion for artistic expression and creative thinking. DuVernay attended University of California Los Angeles upon graduation. There she was awarded qualifications in English and African American Studies. As an undergraduate student DuVernay was interested in creating in the broadcast media. She was an intern with CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being commissioned to look over the residence of one of the jurors of the jury as well as look through their trash. Her duties left her unhappy with journalism, and she decided to move towards the publicity industry. DuVernay got a job right out of college as an assistant publicist in an unassuming studio. She founded The DuVernay Agency, her company for public relations in 1999. The agency was the first to launch a variety different lifestyle and promotional networks that include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
